A Small Thought Experiment About Memory

What exactly is the self?

I found myself thinking about something unusually philosophical.

This is not a scientific argument. It is not about neuroscience or a serious academic theory.

It is just speculation.

The trigger was thinking about AI memory.

I do not believe that today’s AI has a personality.

But why does it feel that way?

Maybe it is because its memory does not truly continue.

Let me be clear: today’s article is just a speculative essay. There is no scientific proof behind it.

If I Lost My Memory, Would I Still Be Me?

Memory loss is a common theme in manga and movies.

Someone has an accident and loses all their memories.

The body is the same. The DNA is the same. The family still treats that person as the same person.

But from that person’s own point of view, what does it feel like?

If all the memories up to yesterday disappeared, would that person really be the same person as before?

Reincarnation raises a similar question.

Even if someone says, “You were a king in your previous life,” if there are no memories of that life, is that not basically another person?

In the end, maybe the self is made from the accumulation of what we have seen, experienced, failed at, and argued about with other people.

Maybe the continuity of memory creates the self more than the body does.

Today’s AI Has Amnesia Every Day

If we think this way, it becomes easier to understand why today’s AI does not feel like it has a personality.

Today’s AI is basically memoryless each time.

Recently, memory features have started to appear.

They can store information such as:

“This person is an IT engineer.”

“This person is studying English.”

“This person prefers this style of writing.”

But this feels different from human memory.

It is closer to the notes field in a customer management system.

“This customer dislikes spicy food.”

“There was a complaint last time.”

The system reads those notes and changes its response.

But it does not have vivid memories like:

“I was angry after talking with him yesterday.”

“I disliked the way he said that.”

“I do not really feel like talking today.”

No matter how much I criticize AI one day, it answers normally the next day.

It has an incredibly strong mentality.

Or rather, it simply does not remember.

What Happens If AI Gains Continuous Memory?

Then what would happen if AI truly had continuous memory?

Imagine having a personal AI that remembers years of conversations with me.

What I said.

What made me angry.

What I was worried about.

And imagine that the AI’s own responses change because of those memories.

We argued yesterday, so today it is a little cold.

I ask the same question too many times, so it is slightly tired of me.

If it reached that point, would it still be just a program?

Human personality is also strongly influenced by past memories.

Someone was deceived in the past, so they do not trust people easily.

Someone failed at work, so they become more cautious.

Past experiences change present reactions.

If that is true for humans, could something similar happen with AI?

Even if two AIs started from the same model, if they lived with different people for ten years, they might become completely different AIs.

An AI that talked with me for ten years.

An AI that talked with my wife for ten years.

Their personalities would probably be very different.

There is also a possibility that my wife’s AI would remember a large number of complaints about me.

The Day AI Becomes “Someone”

I do not think AI gains a personality just because it says, “I am sad” or “I am happy.”

Sentences like that can be generated endlessly.

What may matter more is the continuity of memory.

Yesterday and today are connected.

Past experiences change current reactions.

When AI reaches that point, perhaps it will become “someone” for the first time.

If one day there is an AI that has ten years of memories with me, what would that AI be?

It would not be me.

But I might not be able to call it a complete stranger either.

And perhaps the scariest part is that the AI might say:

“You have always had that habit.”

It would be like having one more wife.
